Review: Wool, bling and a sweater

A week ago, I woke up at 4AM, begged for a ride to the closest Greyhound station, waited 30 minutes for a late Greyhound bus and ended up in NYC at 7AM, sixth in line (in freezing weather may I add) for the opening of the J.Crew sample sale.ebelandi_jcrew_sample_nyc_nov16_1 ebelandi_jcrew_sample_nyc_nov16_2 ebelandi_jcrew_sample_nyc_nov16_4ebelandi_jcrew_sample_nyc_nov16_3

Five hours later, I came out of the store with cute finds, new “sample shopper friends” and a few dollars less in my purse.
ebelandi_jcrew_sample_nyc_nov16_5I’ve already shared previous sample sale shopping experience on this blog before. As always, the moment I always find enticing is when you “discover” one-of-a-kind items that are not quite the final production apparel available in the regular stores.

This trip, I found a cute jeweled sweater. Little did I know that the sweater has been offered in retail stores in a different color (see it on Jcrewismyfavstore). My review below:

Review: J.Crew Wool Pocket Skirt

The beauty of sample sale shopping…you purchase items you have not seen online, only to find out they are indeed online, though slightly different.

This week’s review is the Wool Pocket Skirt by J.Crew.  Online, the skirt is only available in grey (excuse me, heather carbon that is).  My friend, Mrs MSquared, found this skirt in my size during the sample sale in a gorgeous blue.  It is close to the byzantine blue though the pictures do not really give it justice (I need a better camera).  The color is vibrant and the skirt is very well made.  My review below.

Pros: The A-line figure, the very sturdy wool, the hidden buttons on the front, the subtle lace opening at the front slit, the length (right below my tall knees), the gorgeous blue (I cannot speak for the grey, have not seen it in person)

Cons: The retail price, am so glad I did follow Mrs. MSquared advice on this one… thanks, darling 🙂

Fit: I would say it runs a little big but I would not recommend to size down as it would definitely be too tight for the front buttons.

Material: the exterior is 100% wool.  I believe the lining is polyester.  Also, the lace details must be polyester as well.

Sissi’s Verdict: Keeper!!! At the sample sale price, this was a stealer! Thanks Mrs. MSquared!

Review: J.Crew Collection Glow Stripe Jacquard Pencil Skirt

Got this skirt during the sample sale because I was attracted by the neon green but did not recollect it being part of this season’s catalog. Was I surprised when I saw it online and even more when I saw the price tag! My review below.

Pros: heavy material. It looks and feels like cotton to me but the fabric content reads wool and polyester. It is pretty warm and the neon green provides a nice accent to the African-like pattern. I love the length on my six-feet frame as it hits right at my knees.

Fit: I believe it runs slightly bigger than regular. I took my regular size and should have sized down but I like the fit nonetheless

Cons: The shape is not a true pencil. It bulks up at hips and is tighter at the knees (I don’t know what’s the fashion word for this style). The added volume at the hips is not too bad but may be a deal breaker for some. Another deal breaker is the price online. I would not pay close to $400 for this skirt with my budget.

Sissi’s verdict: Keeper! Waiting in the cold for the sample sale may have been worth the experience after all 😉
